MABA is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status that aims to encourage interest in the scientific study, research and conservation of moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) in the Australian Region (Australasia).

The financial resources of the society are derived from annual subscriptions, donations, sponsorships, gifts or bequests and sales. The income and property of the society are used only for the administration of the society, such as maintaining and updating the website and organising annual meetings, and the promotion of its objectives.
